'Whale Star' is a love story that begins in 1926 Gyeongseong, when a maid named Heo Su-a from a pro-Japanese family saves Kang Haeng-hyun, an independence activist who has fallen into the sea. It depicts the fiery and brilliant romance of the youth who were both their homeland and their love that they had to protect amidst an era of passion.

Beyond J explained, "The role of Han Yeon-kyung, played by Kang Han-na, is a female independence activist with a strong character who did not give up her will for independence even after losing her husband and family while engaged in the independence movement. She joins 'Cafe Whale Star', a mission base for independence activists, and is a character who swallows her boiling indignation within and moves forward upright toward independence."
