"Who approved this?"

Social media erupted after theater chain Cinemark unveiled a popcorn bucket for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." While the design intent was to depict webbing shooting from Spider-Man's hand, netizens' imaginations took a completely different turn.

The structure features a white popcorn bowl placed atop Spider-Man's hand in a web-shooting pose, with a drink straw attached, designed to allow consumers to enjoy popcorn and a beverage simultaneously in one container. However, the appearance of the white bowl perched on the hand sparked a flood of reactions suggesting it resembled something entirely different. One netizen sarcastically remarked, "Someone actually approved this, amazing," while another directly compared it to "Spider-Man's bodily fluid tornado," saying, "We don't need Spider-Man's bodily fluid tornado, thank you," eliciting widespread laughter.

The popcorn bucket's design unintentionally evoked suggestive associations, leading to speculation that this was an intentional promotional tactic. One netizen pointed out, "The popcorn bucket industry has been intentionally making things risqué for promotion since the 'Dune 2' sandworm bucket." Despite Cinemark not yet releasing sales dates or pricing, the mere unveiling of the bucket drew global attention from netizens.

Cinemark is one of North America's top three theater chains, headquartered in Texas, USA, and operates over 500 theaters across the United States.

Meanwhile, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" marks the fourth Spider-Man series starring Tom Holland, returning five years after "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in 2021. Zendaya will reprise her role as MJ, with Sydney Sweeney and Jon Berthal joining the cast. The on-screen reunion of Tom Holland and Zendaya, who were reportedly married in secret earlier this year, has also become a major topic of discussion.

The Instagram comments section for Cinemark was flooded with reactions. Comments such as "When did Peter get a liquid gun?" (@vintagebiggs) and "Spider-Man and his bodily fluids" (@jellybelinda0312) lined up, using overtly suggestive language. One netizen left a bitter comment: "It's 2026, and honestly, adult comments are uncomfortable. For kids, it's just a cool popcorn bucket." Despite the controversy, "Spider-Man Popcorn Bucket" has become a viral sensation on social media worldwide, delivering significant promotional effects even before the film's release.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is the fourth Spider-Man series in the MCU, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. It is scheduled to open in the United States on July 31. In South Korea, along with the UK, France, Italy, and other countries, the film will be released two days earlier than the U.S., on July 29.
