Actor Hyun Bin was appointed to the National Intelligence Service's "honorary counterintelligence agent."

The National Intelligence Service announced on the 7th that Hyun Bin was appointed as an "honorary counterintelligence agent." The appointment was made to inform the public of the exact concept of counterintelligence, which was limited to "finding and arresting North Korean spies" in the wake of the revision of the espionage crime.

Counterintelligence refers to all countermeasures to find and check and block foreign intelligence activities contrary to national security and national interests.

Hyun Bin played an NIS agent struggling to save a South Korean hostage taken in the 2023 film Bargaining.

"The importance of counterintelligence is increasing due to frequent incidents that threaten the survival of the country, such as the leakage of high-tech and defense industry secrets by foreign countries," an NIS official said. "The NIS will actively meet public expectations through thorough counterintelligence activities after the revision of espionage crimes with Hyun Bin, an "honorary counterintelligence agent."
