Cyber diplomat group VANK has demanded that Disney+ rectify historical distortions in '21st Century Grand Duchess'.

On the 17th, VANK announced in a statement, "We have launched a campaign to correct erroneous audio and subtitles for Disney+, which is currently streaming the MBC drama '21st Century Grand Duchess' overseas."

The problematic scene appeared in the 11th episode, which aired on the 15th. The scene depicted a coronation ceremony set in a 21st-century constitutional monarchy in the Republic of Korea, showing the king wearing a nine-streamed crown while courtiers shouted "Long live the king."

VANK pointed out, "While 'Long live the king' is appropriate as an expression symbolizing the monarch of an independent nation, the drama used 'Long live the king' (Cheonsae), which could be interpreted as a term used by vassal states under the order of the Chinese imperial court."

VANK also criticized the historical accuracy of the king's crown, explaining, "To symbolize the emperor of an independent sovereign nation, a twelve-streamed crown would be more appropriate. However, the drama featured a nine-streamed crown, which could ultimately give the impression of a vassal who is a subject of the Chinese emperor."

According to VANK, Disney+ is broadcasting the relevant scenes with the audio and subtitles uncorrected. VANK expressed concern, "Given that this work is available with subtitles in 10 languages, including Japanese, in addition to Korean, distorted historical expressions could spread across borders to viewers worldwide."

VANK announced its plan to strengthen historical verification activities for global OTT content in light of this controversy. The group also plans to launch a global civic movement to report and demand corrections of historical errors in Korean dramas and video content alongside Hallyu fans worldwide.
