'The highly anticipated Korean derby between Hwang Hee-chan (Schalke 04) and Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich), both 1996-born national team players, was disappointingly canceled.

Hwang Hee-chan and Kim Min-jae were both absent from the lineup for the Round 2 match of the 2026–2027 German Bundesliga held at Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on the 6th at 1:30 a.m. (Korean time).

Hwang Hee-chan had recently moved to Schalke on loan from Wolverhampton (England) at the end of the transfer window, and coincidentally, Schalke's first opponent was Bayern Munich, drawing significant attention to the possibility of their head-to-head matchup.

However, as Hwang Hee-chan had only recently joined his new team, he was excluded from the matchday squad entirely and focused on fitness adjustments. Kim Min-jae, who had started in all official matches since the season opener, was also left out of the starting lineup and did not come off the bench either.

Unless they face each other in the DFB Pokal (German Cup), Hwang Hee-chan and Kim Min-jae are expected to meet again only in the second Bundesliga clash of the season, scheduled for late January next year.

With both Korean players absent, Schalke and Bayern Munich failed to decide the match, ending in a 0-0 draw.

Bayern Munich dominated with an impressive 83% ball possession and outshot their opponents 15-4, but they were unable to capitalize on six major scoring opportunities, leaving them frustrated.

Bayern Munich brought on Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, and Michael Olise in the second half, but could not break through the goal defended by Loris Karius for Schalke.
