Prosecutors Seek Prison Sentence for Two Women Who Extorted ₩200 Million from YouTuber Tzuyang: “Settlement Reached with Victim”
Prosecutors have requested prison sentences for two women accused of extorting approximately ₩200 million (around USD 150,000) from popular YouTuber Tzuyang (real name Park Jung-won) through threats.
At a sentencing hearing held on the 18th at the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Koo Chang-gyu, prosecutors asked the court to sentence defendants Song and Kim to one year in prison each for charges of joint blackmail under the Punishment of Violent Acts, etc. Act.
The two women were accused of threatening to expose Tzuyang's past through her ex-boyfriend and former agency CEO (referred to as “A”) from June 2021 to November 2022, ultimately extorting ₩216 million.
Prosecutors explained their sentencing request, stating, “Although the amount extorted is substantial and the crime is serious, the defendants have no prior criminal records beyond fines. They have admitted to the crime, expressed remorse, and reached an amicable settlement with the victim.”
The defense stated that the defendants paid a total of ₩256 million to Tzuyang, which includes the original extorted amount of ₩216 million and an additional ₩40 million as settlement. They added, “There is no excuse for what we did, and we offer a sincere apology to the victim. We have worked to return the extorted funds and repair the harm done. Despite financial difficulties, we managed to deliver the settlement payment and offer a heartfelt apology. The victim does not wish for criminal punishment. The defendants are deeply remorseful and ask for leniency.”
The court’s final ruling is scheduled for August 20.
