HYBE America is teaming up with Paramount Pictures to produce a film centered on K-pop.
On July 22 (local time), HYBE America announced that it will co-produce a K-pop-themed movie with the major American film studio, Paramount Pictures. The film will follow the story of a Korean-American girl who, despite her family’s opposition, auditions for a TV competition show in pursuit of her dream to join the next big K-pop girl group. The title of the film has yet to be decided.
The lead roles have been cast with Jiyoung Yoo, who voiced the character Joy in the Netflix animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters, and Eric Nam, known for his role as surgical resident Yona Yoon in last year’s Hollywood movie Transplant.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release on February 12, 2027, and filming will begin in mid-September this year, with all scenes to be shot entirely in South Korea. This marks the first time a major Hollywood production will be fully filmed in Korea.
The film will be directed by Benson Lee, with the screenplay written by Eileen Shim. It will be produced by James Shin, President of Film & TV at HYBE America, along with Arthur Spector and Joshua Davis of Epic Magazine, and Scooter Braun. Executive producers include Joshuah Bearman (Epic Magazine), John Zaozirny, and Scott Manson. Bryan Oh, Senior Vice President at Paramount Pictures, will oversee the entire project on behalf of the studio.
Director Benson Lee said, "This movie is my love letter to K-pop, a culture filled with energy, passion, magic, and an amazing community that supports it. I'm deeply grateful to Paramount Pictures for backing this project, the dedicated production team, and everyone who helped bring this story to life."
James Shin, President of Film & TV at HYBE America, commented, "We're thrilled to partner with Paramount Pictures to tell a K-pop story to global audiences. This film will capture the dedication, artistry, and unstoppable popularity of K-pop, while also telling a universal story about chasing one’s dreams against all odds."
