Comedian Lee Hyuk-jae (53) is facing public backlash after causing a drunk driving controversy while showing no signs of remorse.

Incheon Yeonsu Police Station announced on the 9th that it has booked Lee Hyuk-jae without detention on suspicion of drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act.

On the night of the 8th around 10 p.m., Lee Hyuk-jae is suspected of rear-ending a motorcycle that was waiting at a traffic light on a road in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, injuring a man in his 20s, Mr. A, who was riding the motorcycle. It is reported that Mr. A was not seriously injured.

At the time of the accident, Lee Hyuk-jae's blood alcohol concentration was found to be at the license suspension level (0.03%~under 0.08%).

After the drunk driving report on the 9th, Lee Hyuk-jae gave a phone interview to StarNews saying, "Acquaintances told me to come to an izakaya about 300m away from my house, so I went and had a drink or two with a bomb shot. I said 'I'm going home' and came out, but since it was only 300m away, I thought 'why would I call a designated driver for this' and drove off," offering a ridiculous explanation.

He also said, "While picking up my phone that I dropped, the car slowly rolled and slightly hit the back of the motorcycle," and explained, "I thought the vehicle was in auto-hold mode with the brakes engaged, so I picked up my phone, but the car moved."

While emphasizing that he reported directly to the police immediately after the accident, he said, "It's not that someone reported me to try to evade drunk driving. I told the police that even though the distance was short, I had consumed alcohol, and I took a breathalyzer test."

Lee Hyuk-jae said, "I don't usually drink much, and I've never been caught in a drunk driving crackdown. I had about two bomb shots, and even this level was measured right away," and "The police said that 0.03% could result in a license suspension. It's unavoidable. It's my carelessness."

Lee Hyuk-jae, who consistently showed such a casual attitude and excuses despite drunk driving being a serious crime that threatens others' lives. In response, netizens are sending sharp criticism saying, "He's a really terrible person," "He's got all kinds of issues," "Most people caught drunk driving make this excuse," "Unavoidable? What kind of sophistry is this," "Drunk driving is a would-be murderer," "Even the excuses are perfect," "He hasn't come to his senses," and more.

Lee Hyuk-jae caused a controversy in 2010 by assaulting a female employee at a room salon and was expelled from the entertainment industry. In 2017, he failed to repay approximately 240 million won that he had borrowed from his former agency and lost a civil lawsuit filed by the company.

After that, Lee Hyuk-jae drew attention by being listed as one of six judges (including the chairperson) in the Democratic Party of Korea proportional youth public audition for metropolitan council members held in March this year ahead of the June 3 local elections.

In particular, Lee Hyuk-jae also drew frowns at this position by saying regarding past controversies, "I have taken sufficient responsibility by also doing overseas volunteer work."

Furthermore, Lee Hyuk-jae has been active as a conservative-leaning YouTuber and made a statement saying "In my values, it's not guilty" regarding President Yoon Suk-yeol Jeon (President)'s '12 và 3 illegal martial law' incident.
