Four years have passed since the late novelist Yi Oe-su left the world.

Yi Oe-su passed away at around 6:40 p.m. on April 25, 2022, at Chuncheon Seongsim Hospital of Chuncheon University in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. He was 76.

The late author underwent surgery after being diagnosed with stage 2 stomach cancer in 2014 and recovered. Although he later endured difficult times with empyema and breast cancer, he had announced his full recovery.

However, in March 2020, he collapsed due to a brain hemorrhage and resumed his battle with illness. At the time, his eldest son, director Lee Han-eol, shared updates that Yi Oe-su was fighting for his life in the emergency room for three days due to pneumonia.

Yi Oe-su made his debut in 1975 as a new writer for the magazine 'Sidae' with his novella 'Sunjang'. He went on to write various genres, including the novels 'Deulgae', 'Jangsu Haneulso', and 'Byeokogeum Hakdo', as well as poetry collections like 'Geuriumdo Hwasagee Doenda' and essays such as 'Hahak Hahak' and 'Cheongchun Bulpae'. He also actively worked across terrestrial variety programs and commercials.

Meanwhile, Yi Oe-su's wife, Jeon Young-ja, declared a 'zombie marriage' (solitary marriage) in 2019. However, after the late author collapsed from a brain hemorrhage, she stayed by his side and continued nursing him. Jeon Young-ja passed away at her home in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, in November 2025.
